TNT Sports presents 4.7 Seconds: For The Championship special (debut: 9:15 p.m. ET March 16, truTV)

On Monday afternoon, TNT Sports announced something cool they'll be premiering Monday night. That would be 4.7 Seconds: For The Championship, a 30-minute special looking back at the final seconds of the North Carolina-Villanova NCAA men's basketball championship game in 2016. It will cover the three-pointer the Tar Heels' Marcus Paige hit at that mark, and then how the Wildcats got the ball to Kris Jenkins for a buzzer-beating, game-winning three that sealed their first title in more than three decades. Here's more from a release:

The special features reflections and behind-the-scenes insights from the key figures who experienced the moment firsthand, including Hall of Fame coaches Jay Wright and Roy Williams, and players Kris Jenkins, Marcus Paige and Ryan Arcidiacono.
Adding perspective to the iconic moment are studio analysts Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith, along with the game’s broadcast team of Jim Nantz, Bill Raftery and Grant Hill.

This special will debut on truTV at 9:15 p.m. ET Monday, but will be available on demand on HBO Max throughout the NCAA Tournament and will re-air on TBS after Elite 8 coverage on March 28. And there's something to be said for a locked-in 30-minute special with a narrow focus but a range of perspectives on it versus a wider look at teams or seasons; that's reminiscent of some of the good work CBS Sports has done with their Four Sides of the Story franchise over the years (which, interestingly enough, kicked off in 2017 with a lineup including a 30-minute segment on Jenkins' shot). Diving into a particular moment this way can pay dividends, and that game ending is certainly worth covering, especially right around this year's March Madness.

HBO presents Born To Bowl docuseries (debut: 9 p.m. ET March 16, HBO/HBO Max)

Curiously enough, 4.7 Seconds: For The Championship isn't the only sports documentary project premiering on Warner Bros. Discovery networks Monday night. But that does happen with a large enough company (and is likely to happen even more if CBS parent Paramount Skydance is able to complete their proposed acquisition of WBD), and it's much less important than it used to be considering how much viewing takes place on-demand these days. And Born To Bowl is quite a different project, coming in under the HBO brand with some big names attached (including executive producer Ben Stiller, seen at centre above at a premiere event in New York City on March 9). Here's more on it from a release:

The HBO Original five-part documentary series BORN TO BOWL, directed by Emmy®-nominated filmmakers James Lee Hernandez and Brian Lazarte (HBO’s “McMillion$”), from A24 and narrated by Liev Schreiber, debuts MONDAY, MARCH 16 (9:00-9:28 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. Subsequent episodes will air Mondays at the same time.
BORN TO BOWL takes viewers inside the colorful world of professional bowling, chronicling five stars of the sport – Kyle Troup, Anthony Simonsen, EJ Tackett, Cameron Crowe, and Jason Belmonte – as they chase glory, respect, and much-needed prize money on the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour.

And here's a trailer:

The PBA has been making some significant media moves lately, including bringing in ex-PFL executive Peter Murray as CEO/head of Lucky Strike Entertainment in January and striking live rights deals with The CW and CBS Sports. A docuseries like this might help get some more eyes on what they're up to, especially with these kinds of big names attached. And they've had some good on-floor stories to tell recently, too, including 23-year-old rookie Brandon Bonta bowling a perfect 300 game to beat big names in the 2026 PBA Players Championship. (However, one less-good story comes from Crowe being placed on indefinite suspension by the PBA recently following charges for possession of marijuana and possession of cocaine; it will be interesting to see if that impacts this series).

Prime Video presents Meal Ticket (debut: March 19 on Prime Video)

Amazon has gotten into the sports documentary game in a big way recently, with entries this year alone already including a third season of Coach Prime, Soul Power: The Legend of the American Basketball Association, and Full Speed: The Daytona 500. They have two more coming out soon, starting with Meal Ticket, a feature-length documentary on the history of the McDonald’s All American Games. Here's more from a release:

Since 1977, basketball’s most famous annual exhibitions of next-generation talent have catapulted high school seniors into the NBA and WNBA, and, for many, turned their dreams of superstardom into reality.
Meal Ticket tells the story of this epic cultural phenomenon through the eyes of the legends it’s created, the lives it’s changed, and the communities it’s transformed. Production began in 2022 and includes coverage from the 2022 and 2023 Games, in addition to other historical moments from the showcase.

Interviews include McDonald’s All Americans Blake Griffin, JJ Redick, Grant Hill, Flau’jae Johnson, Jalen Rose, Seimone Augustus, Patrick Ewing, Dereck Lively II, Candace Parker, Dominique Wilkins, Tracy McGrady, Paul Pierce, Breanna Stewart, Alonzo Mourning, A’ja Wilson, Amar’e Stoudemire, and Chris Mullin, among others. The film celebrates the contributions of legendary coaches John Wooden and Morgan Wootten, who helped bring the concept of the country’s premier high school all-star game to life.

The history of these All-American Games is definitely an interesting idea for a documentary, and something that's had a lot of impact without necessarily receiving a lot of specific coverage. That's a strong interview lineup as well, and it's notable that Jay-Z's Roc Nation is involved in the production of this one (along with Known Originals, Creative Control, and Prime Video Sports). It's from first-time directors Carlton Gerard Sabbs and Corey Colvin, and is produced by Billy Bragg. Here's a trailer:

Prime Video presents Rory McIlroy: The Masters Wait (debut: March 30 on Prime Video)

This one, also from Prime Video, probably has the highest-profile subject of any of the documentaries mentioned here. Rory McIlroy has long been one of the most important figures in modern golf, and one of the golfers who's known well beyond the ranks of the sport's fervent fans. And, as mentioned with 4.7 Seconds above, this feature-length documentary has the advantage of locking in on a particular moment rather than McIlroy's full career. Here's more from a release:

There are rare moments in sport when time seems to collapse—when years of heartbreak and longing compress into a single breath. For Rory McIlroy, that moment came on No. 18 green at Augusta National Golf Club in April of 2025. After a gripping playoff with Justin Rose, the final putt dropped, and Rory fell to his knees, gasping as though he had been holding his breath for fourteen years. Rory McIlroy: The Masters Wait captures that moment and unpacks the relentless pressure, devastating failures, and unwavering determination that made his triumph so profound—the story of a prodigy who became a champion, was knocked down year after year, and rebuilt himself into one of sport's most resilient figures.
Rory McIlroy: The Masters Wait is centered on Rory's battle with one of the most storied and revered golf courses in the world: Augusta National, home of the prestigious Masters Tournament. To fans, Augusta National represents golf's ultimate cathedral—pristine fairways, blooming azaleas, with a Tournament steeped in tradition and glory. But to Rory, Augusta National became a place of fears, failures, and expectations that tormented him for fourteen years. From his devastating 2011 collapse when he blew a four-shot Sunday lead at just 21 years old, to the near misses, disappointments, and outright heartbreaks that followed, Augusta National became his nemesis—the one place that refused to yield even as he conquered the other three major championships: the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship, and The Open. The Masters remained elusive, the missing piece that prevented him from completing golf's most exclusive achievement, the career Grand Slam. Built around the dramatic final round of the 2025 Masters and unfolding hole by hole, the film is a cinematic battle between man and course, revealing why sport is never just sport, but myth played out in real time.

This one is directed by Drea Cooper, and is an Everything Else production in association with Firethorn Productions. Here's a trailer:

Fox Sports presents Summer of '94 (debut: May 23 on Fox)

There are undoubtedly going to be plenty of soccer-focused documentary projects heading into the men's FIFA World Cup in North America this summer, and this one from Fox sounds interesting. With this tournament coming (largely) to the U.S. for just the second time ever and the first time since 1994, it's well worth a detailed look back at the 1994 event and how that figured into soccer in the U.S. overall. And the specific focus here on the USMNT in 1994 could pay benefits; a lot of the popular discussion on 1994 has centered on the hosting process, the accompanying work to launch Major League Soccer, and more, but the U.S. team's performance in that event (making it through the group stage before losing to eventual champions Brazil in the Round of 16) deserves its own flowers. And this has some interesting footage the team members themselves captured at the time. Here's more from a release:

"SUMMER OF ’94 brilliantly captures the dramatic turning point of soccer’s popularity in America and the inspiring 1994 U.S. men’s team," said Barry Nugent, Vice President, Development & Original Programming, FOX Sports. "The 1994 World Cup changed the trajectory of the sport forever and this film tells the unfiltered story about a group of players who came together under impossible circumstances and helped put U.S. soccer on the global stage. As we look ahead to FIFA World Cup 2026™ across North America, FOX Sports is proud to partner with Imagine Entertainment and the filmmakers to bring audiences a powerful reminder of where it all began."
Armed with camcorders, the 1994 U.S. players and their coach documented it all, capturing raw moments as the underdogs grew into future legends. Featuring never-before-seen footage and new interviews with soccer legends and FOX Sports analysts Alexi Lalas and Cobi Jones, alongside Tony Meola, John Harkes, Marcelo Balboa, Eric Wynalda, Jeff Agoos, Thomas Dooley, Paul Caligiuri, head coach Bora Milutinović and more, the film reveals how chaos, chemistry, coaching and grit forged a brotherhood that helped carve a new path for U.S. soccer and set the stage for a successful soccer moment in America accompanied by the rise of Major League Soccer.
"When we started this film, we were simply fans who felt this team never got its due," said Dave LaMattina and Chad Walker, Directors, Copper Pot Pictures. "They didn’t lift a trophy, but they changed the sport in America. What struck us most was how much they were figuring out in real time, with no league, no blueprint and no guarantees. The footage they captured puts you inside that experience with them as they chose to believe in each other before anyone else did."

In addition to LaMattina and Walker, there's a powerhouse team behind this, including Brian Grazer and Ron Howard amongst a big cast of executive producers. It's produced by Imagine Documentaries in partnership with Stand Together and Cookie Jar & A Dream Studios. And while this one is still months off, it will be worth keeping an eye out for.
